Safety: Lockheed Martin/U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory/Office of the Secretary of Defense
The Automatic Integrated Collision Avoidance System is the first fully integrated, all-aspect protection system for combat aircraft, preventing both midair and ground collisions. The Pentagon estimates the technology will save 57 F-16s and F-35s and 40 pilots through 2040.
Technology & Innovation: Collins Elbit Vision Systems (CEVS) F-35 Gen III Lightweight Helmet
Challenging development of the F-35’s helmet-mounted display, which replaces a traditional head-up display and improves pilot situational awareness, culminated in January 2018 with approval of the lightweight version for flight, clearing pilots under 136 lb. to fly the Joint Strike Fighter.

First to dive into the potentially fast-growing market for dedicated smallsat launches, privately owned Rocket Lab has entered commercial service with its innovative two-stage Electron rocket, which features battery power, 3D-printed engines and composite structures.

Facing increasing pressure from an influx of startups, Ambrose has retooled Lockheed’s space division to deliver high-performance satellites at lower cost. He has opened a $300 million small-satellite factory while still winning orders for military missile warning and navigation satellites.

GE’s Catalyst turboprop, which entered testingat the end of 2017 and is to fly in 2019 in Cessna’s Denali, makes the most use of additive manufacturing in an aircraft engine—12 3D-printed parts replacing 855 conventionally manufactured parts andsaving 5% weight.
Safety: Gulfstream Runway Overrun Awareness and Alerting System
Gulfstream took Honeywell’s Runway Awareness and Advisory System to a new level by using dynamic data, such as runway condition and predicted touchdown point, to gauge if there is enough runway to safely stop and, if not, to alert crews to go around.

Aaron Martinez will graduate from the United States Naval Academy with a BS in Aerospace Engineering and a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He is currently enrolled in the Naval Academy’s growing rotorcraft program, which emphasizes helicopter and vertical lift performance, stability and control. After graduation, Aaron will report to The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia followed by flight training in Pensacola, Florida to become a Marine Corps pilot.
Cadet 2/C Austin Brown
U.S. Coast Guard Academy
Cadet 2/c Austin Brown is the Vice-President of the Coast Guard Academy's Aviation Club which is the largest student organization at the Academy. He is a qualified instructor in the Academy's RedBird MCX full-motion flight simulator. 2/c Brown has also completed 24 total flight hours toward his Private Pilot's license, and he has leveraged his flight experience to compete with the CGA Flight Team in ground and simulator events. Upon graduation, he hopes to attend Naval Flight Training in Pensacola, FL with the goal of becoming a Coast Guard aviator.
Cadet 1/C Ryan Olson
U.S. Air Force Academy
Cadet 1/C Ryan Olson attends the United States Air Force Academy. He the Executive officer in Cadet Squadron 19. He is an Astronautical Engineering major at the Academy and is an active member of the FalconSAT program. As a member of this capstone project he is contributing to the design of the next satellite for the program. He has completed a research internship with the Air Force Research Lab in Maui, HI where he contributed to a new method for calculating satellite relative motion. Following graduation he hopes to attend graduate school to study Astronautics before going to Sheppard Air Force Base for Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training.

Cadet Captain Bogue M. Waller is studying mechanical engineering with a focus in aeronautical engineering at the United States Military Academy where he is part of a capstone team focusing on the recovery of a large fixed wing UAV without the use of a runway. Cadet Waller is fascinated by aviation and looks forward to a lifelong career in the field. After graduating in May, he will commission as an Army Aviation officer and begin flight school.
